Good evening friends,
Tonight I would like to discuss the use of incense to set the tone of a room for practice. Scent is a way to calm the nervous system and in many cultures smoke cleanses and clears a room from dark energies. Many times when I am preparing for my personal practice I utilize incense to bring me back to the present, in fact I have used them so many times it has become quite nostalgic.
Creating the tone for your practice, can completely alter the energy that you create and receive. If you struggle to clear your mind and settle for practice I cannot stress the change you may receive by finding an aroma that resonates with you. Overtime this can become a ritual for you and can create a routine, showing your brain that you are ready for your yoga practice or meditation. This can be used mid work day if you need an excuse to breathe, before making a stressful decision, and many other moments you may need some mental assistance.
My tried and true go to brand of incense is Satya. Their incense are cost effective and smell amazing.
Here is a link of incense that I suggest: https://amzn.to/3MRv6eU
Once you have found a smell that you like here is my suggestion for utilizing them:
Light the incense and walk the smoke around your room and letting yourself know that you are in a safe environment.
Set your incense in a cute incense holder of your choice and allow it to burn down. This is the holder that I have and love: https://amzn.to/3MRv6eU
Close your eyes and begin to focus on the scent, start taking deep breaths and allow your nervous system to relax.
Once you feel ready begin your practice in anyway that feels best for you! I typically start with Child's pose.
This is certainly not something that needs to be complicated, but rather a small ritual preparing you for practice.
I hope you find this helpful and try to incorporate it in your practice!
