Yoga did begin as a workout for me and then it evolved to so much more. I am so grateful that I discovered yoga during a stressful season of life, like many people. Yoga has been foundational for me during my parents separation, Covid, college, and working stressful jobs. What started as a way to stretch and move slowly became something much deeper — a practice that helped me reconnect with my breath, slow my mind, and feel present again. Yoga is a practice I remind myself to use in all moments of my day to day life.

At The Grotto Yoga, I believe yoga doesn’t need to be complicated or intimidating. It simply begins with slowing down and paying attention. Yoga is a safe space for anyone to join and wonderful journey to embark on.

If you’re new to yoga and feeling overwhelmed about where to start, this guide will walk you through a gentle and approachable way to begin.

Why Yoga Helps With Stress:

  • Yoga works by calming the nervous system and reconnecting the body with the breath.

  • When we slow our breathing and move intentionally, the body naturally shifts out of “fight or flight” and into a more relaxed state.

Many people find yoga helpful for:

  • reducing anxiety

  • improving sleep

  • releasing physical tension

  • creating moments of calm in busy days

  • finding presence

5 Beginner Yoga Poses to Start With

1. Child’s Pose:

A grounding posture that allows the body to relax and the breath to deepen. Child's pose can also be a wonderful hip opener and a safe pose to take whenever you may need to ground. This pose is also a mini inversion, allowing the heart to be above the head.

2. Cat–Cow:

A gentle spinal movement that releases tension in the back and shoulders. Cat-Cow is a great way to tune in with the body's needs and an appropriate way to begin a practice. This is a great pose to take to reset after a long day of work at a desk.

3. Downward Dog

A full-body stretch that helps build strength and flexibility. Downward dog is an inversion, allowing the the heart to be above the head. This pose is foundational in Vinyasa style yoga and is considered a resting position.

4. Seated Forward Fold

A calming stretch for the hamstrings and lower back. Seated forward fold does not to be taken to an extreme stretch to get wonderful benefits. Bend your knees as much as needed.

5. Legs Up the Wall

One of the most relaxing poses for calming the nervous system. Legs up the wall is also wonderful for digestion, I often suggest this pose after eating a large meal or to prepare your body for rest.

Tips for Starting a Yoga Practice

If you’re just beginning, remember:

  1. Start small

  2. Even 5–10 minutes of movement can make a difference.

  3. Focus on breathing

  4. The breath is the foundation of yoga.

  5. Be patient with yourself

  6. Yoga is a practice, not a performance.

  7. Yoga is not about flexibility or perfect poses.

  8. It’s about creating space to breathe, move, and reconnect with yourself.

That’s the intention behind The Grotto Yoga — a place where movement is simple, grounding, and accessible for everyone.
